Assam: Today Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated India's longest river bridge in Assam.
Prime Minister Modi, who is on a day-long visit to the state, was received by Chief Minister of Assam Sarbananda Sonowal, Governor Banwarilal and several others at the airport.
The 9.2 kilometer long Dhola Sadiya bridge, built on the Lohit river, a tributary of Brahmputra will connect Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.
As per the reports the construction of the bridge began in 2011 and was built at the cost of Rs 950 crore.
"Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Dhola-Sadiya bridge as a mark of three-years BJP rule under him," sources said.
However, the construction of bridge begin in 2011 during UPA govt under DR Manmohan Singh .
It is said that the bridge can withstand a weight of 60-tonne battle tanks which makes it strategically important for the military.
The bridge also cuts down the distance between Assam to Meka by 165 kilometer reducing the travel time from six hours to just one hour.
