Even as Wani family of Odoo Shopian is in a state of shock following killing of son Sameer in an encounter on Wednesday, daughter Saima is battling for life at SKIMS Soura after being hit by bullet in the head.

On Thursday, Saima was alone at Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) as rest of the family were in Shopian to bury her brother Sameer. She is yet to know about the fate of her brother.

Saima is one of the two girls injured during the encounter in Chaigund village of Shopian where her brother Sameer was among the two militants killed on Wednesday.

With sunken eyes and bald hair, Saima, 18, looks lifeless. At SICU of SKIMS, doctors ensure that she recovers.

Afaq, one of her relative, said, “Sameer had joined militancy three months back. When he left home at first, the family thought that he has gone missing and lodged an FIR in the police station and after couple of months they (family) got to know that he had joined militancy.”

Ayoub Wani, uncle of Saima, while terming it a difficult time for family to deal with the death of their son, narrates how the two girls – Saima and Sumaiya - who are neighbours as well relatives, were allegedly targeted by Forces.

“The boys were playing cricket in a nearby field, and the forces came and shot one of the boy, Shakir Ahmad Mir, who succumbed to his injuries. The killing evoked protest in the village and the women came out and started wailing,” said Ayoub.

“These girls were home, when forces shot dead a boy and when they rushed to see what had happened, they too were targeted and shot in the head.”

Sumaiya is stable and recovering, but Saima is in a critical state. The bullet has gone deep into her head and damaged it.

“When they (girls) were shot, we rushed them to hospital, but the forces didn’t allow us to go. At least we were stopped at ten places, but somehow we managed to reach to sub district hospital Rajpora and from there we were shifted to district hospital Pulwama”

“The doctors at Pulwama later shifted the girls to SMHS hospital and from there they were shifted to SKIMS,” said Ayoub.

Dr Amin Tabish, Medical Superintendent of SKIMS said, “Sumaiya had a minor injury, she is stable and is improving, but Saima was not brought to the hospital in a good state. But since was operated, she is showing little improvement.”

A police statement issued about the shootout said: “During a cordon at Chaigund area of Shopian the militants, who were wearing Burkhas, tried to break the cordon and fired indiscriminately on the search party. The security forces retaliated during which the Burkha-clad militants were forced to go back into hiding.”

During indiscriminate firing by the militants and the retaliatory fire one civilian namely Shakir Ahmad Mir resident of Kalampora pulwama got killed and two ladies received bullet injuries.”
